Mar 4, 2009, Important Changes to COBRA

Welcome news about COBRA! The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides for a 65 percent subsidy for COBRA continuation premiums for up to 9 months for workers who have been involuntarily terminated, and for their families. The subsidy terminates when the covered individual is offered any new employer-sponsored healthcare coverage or becomes eligible for Medicare.

To qualify for the subsidy, individuals must meet all of the following requirements:

* Is eligible for COBRA continuation coverage at any time during the period beginning September 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2009; * Elects COBRA coverage (when first offered or during the additional election period), and * Has a qualifying event for COBRA coverage that is the employee's involuntary termination during the period beginning September 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2009.

Contact your old employer for more information about this important change to your coverage.

Nancy Collamer, author of The Layoff Survival Guide will appear on CNN special report "Jobs 2009", as CNN addresses the current economic situation and its affect on the workplace.

Nancy will be on CNN Christmas Day between 1:00-2:00 pm Eastern, Saturday December 27 between 1-2p.m. Eastern, and again on Sunday December 28 between 3-4p.m. Eastern.


Dec 2, 2008, Federal Government Extends Unemployment Benefits

The federal government recently approved an extension of unemployment benefits, extending benefits by seven weeks in all states, and extending them for another 13 weeks on top of that in states with unemployment rates that have averaged 6% or higher over the most recent three months.
